Significant differences in health and financial resources exist across family structures, particularly leading up to and during retirement. This research uses data from the Health and Retirement Study and the Survey of Consumer Finances to examine what drives differences in both the levels and composition of resources across family types, with a particular focus on the role of Social Security. As marriage rates decline, will financial vulnerability rise in tandem?
