Paulo de Medeiros, "Transnational Pessoa: Reading Fernando Pessoa Against Nationalism"

Fernando Pessoa, generally viewed as Portugal’s greatest poet, has for too long been identified with a national and nationalist agenda. This paper attempts a reading against the grain that takes into account both Pessoa’s own background and a refusal of simplistic identifications. It also examines Pessoa’s displacement into other media, focusing particularly on three recent graphic novels produced in Portugal and Brazil. This talk is part of International Education Week (#IEW).
