This talk reveals how a diverse cast of Chinese and Americans – including athletes, physicists, and performing artists – played a critical but often overlooked role in remaking US-China relations. Based on new archival sources, Dr. Pete Millwood (University of Melbourne) argues that the significance of cultural and scientific exchanges went beyond reacquainting the Chinese and American people, but also powerfully influenced Sino-American diplomatic relations .
