Description
Conditional on the distance to the Russian border, the strength of the Russian television signal can be treated as random, allowing us to identify the causal effect of signal availability on the electoral outcomes. Using precinct-level data from the two national elections in 2014, we find that the Russian television had a significant effect on raising electoral support for the pro-Russian and lowering support for the pro-Western parties.
